See your parent’s MyChart account
Hospitals call this proxy access, or family access. You sign in with your own login and switch to your parent’s account, so you never need their password. At UAB Medicine: the patient sends the invitation from their own account.
- 1If you and your parent both have active MyChart accounts, your parent sends you a proxy invitation through MyChart.
- 2You accept the invitation through your own MyChart account.
- 3If your parent cannot send the invitation for any reason, proxy access may need to be requested through the clinic or the MyChart support process.
- 4Some confidential information is not shown to proxies. Your parent can change or remove your access at any time.
Get copies without the portal
From the UAB Health Information Management, Release of Information Office.

- 2Your parent fills it in, names you to receive the records, and signs it.
- 3Mail it to UAB Health Information Management, Release of Information Office, 1201 11th Avenue South, Birmingham, AL 35205, or fax it to 205-930-6721.
- 4Or drop it off at the 1st Floor of UAB Highlands, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (closed 12 to 1), with photo ID. Questions: 205-930-7724.

- 30 days to respond under HIPAA, often sooner; mailed copies take longer

Your parent’s rights
- Your parent has a legal right to copies of their own records.
- When your parent asks, the hospital must answer within 30 days. It can take 30 more days once, if it explains why in writing.
- It can charge only a reasonable fee, based on what the copy costs to make.
- These rules also cover an electronic copy your parent asks, in writing, to have sent to you.
Keep the results in one place
Vita Health Coach is an iPhone app that keeps each family member's results in their own file and explains each new result in plain words. Once you have access, add your parent, tap Connect a hospital and search for UAB Medicine. Paper copies work too: take a photo of each page.
