How to get into a parent’s patient portal

Proxy access is the official way to see a parent’s records. You sign in with your own login and switch to theirs, so you don’t need their password. Each hospital does this differently, so here are the published steps for each one we’ve checked.

Checked against each hospital’s own page on November 2, 2026. Steps can change, so follow the official link.

If your hospital isn’t listed

  1. 1Search the hospital's website for "proxy access" or "family access".
  2. 2Check if your parent has a portal account. Many hospitals ask for one first.
  3. 3In most cases your parent sends the invitation, or both of you sign a form.
  4. 4Create your own portal account and sign in with it, not your parent's.
  5. 5If you can't find it, ask the hospital's medical records office for the proxy form.

Keeping your own records

Vita Health Coach is an iPhone app that connects to hospitals in the US and explains your records in plain words. Connecting your own hospital is free.
