Your parent’s results and records at Novant

How to see your parent’s MyChart account with your own login, how to get copies from the records office, and how to keep the results in one place.

See your parent’s MyChart account

Hospitals call this proxy access, or family access. You sign in with your own login and switch to your parent’s account, so you never need their password. At Novant: the patient sends the invitation from their own account.

  1. 1Your parent logs in to MyChart. In the menu bar, under Sharing, your parent selects Share My Record.
  2. 2Your parent selects Friends and family access, then +INVITE SOMEONE, and fills in the required fields.
  3. 3You log in to your own personal MyChart account to see your parent's information.
  4. 4You can also complete a Proxy Consent Form and return it to one of Novant Health's medical facilities.
  5. 5For help, call the MyChart Patient Support Line at 1-844-266-8268.

Get copies without the portal

From the Novant Health Enterprise Release of Information department.

  1. 1Your parent can request a copy of their records inside MyChart, at no cost.
  2. 2Or download the Patient Request for Access to Protected Health Information form.
  3. 3Your parent fills it in, ticks To be provided to the following person, writes your name and contact details, and signs and dates it.
  4. 4Call Release of Information at 844-763-9163 to ask where to send it. The form does not list an address.
Family members:
If the patient lacks legal capacity or is unable to sign, an authorized personal representative may sign, with supporting documentation.
Cost, as the hospital states it:
Records sent to another healthcare provider are free of charge. The patient is responsible for charges when records are sent to any other third parties.

it may take up to 30 days to process your request

Your parent’s rights

  • Your parent has a legal right to copies of their own records.
  • When your parent asks, the hospital must answer within 30 days. It can take 30 more days once, if it explains why in writing.
  • It can charge only a reasonable fee, based on what the copy costs to make.
  • These rules also cover an electronic copy your parent asks, in writing, to have sent to you.

Keep the results in one place

How do I keep my parent's Novant results in one place?

In Vita Health Coach on iPhone, add your parent as a person, open Health records, tap Connect a hospital, search for Novant and sign in with your own login once you have family access. Their results arrive in their own file, and you can ask about any result in plain words. Connecting another person's hospital is part of a paid plan in the app.
