See your parent’s kp.org (Act for a Family Member) account
Hospitals call this proxy access, or family access. You sign in with your own login and switch to your parent’s account, so you never need their password. At Kaiser Permanente: the member adds you as a caregiver from their own kp.org account.
- 1You need your own kp.org account and must be at least 18. You and your parent must live in the same region.
- 2On kp.org, sign in, go to Act for a Family Member, select Add a person, then An Adult I care for.
- 3Give your parent the instructions plus your full name, date of birth and kp.org user ID. Never give your password.
- 4Your parent signs in, goes to Act for a Family Member, selects Add a person, then A caregiver for myself.
- 5Your parent can also do this in person. They bring photo ID and their Kaiser Permanente ID card.
- 6If your parent cannot consent, contact Member Services at a local facility. They may ask for guardianship or health care power of attorney papers.
Get copies without the portal
From the Release of Medical Information (ROMI).

- 3Do not send copies of forms or records unless asked.
- 4Questions: 1-925-210-8834, weekdays 9 am to 12:30 pm and 1:30 pm to 5 pm.
- Time, as the hospital states it:
- Additional time is required for mail delivery and processing.
Your parent’s rights
- Your parent has a legal right to copies of their own records.
- When your parent asks, the hospital must answer within 30 days. It can take 30 more days once, if it explains why in writing.
- It can charge only a reasonable fee, based on what the copy costs to make.
- These rules also cover an electronic copy your parent asks, in writing, to have sent to you.
Keep the results in one place
Vita Health Coach is an iPhone app that keeps each family member's results in their own file and explains each new result in plain words. Once you have access, add your parent, tap Connect a hospital and search for Kaiser Permanente. Paper copies work too: take a photo of each page.
