See your parent’s Inova MyChart account

Hospitals call this proxy access, or family access. You sign in with your own login and switch to your parent’s account, so you never need their password. At Inova: it starts from Friends and Family Access in MyChart or with a paper proxy form.

  1. 1In MyChart, click Menu, pick Share My Record under Sharing, and choose Friends and Family Access to start the process.
  2. 2Each adult must have their own MyChart account, so sign up for yours if you do not have one.
  3. 3Or fill in the form Proxy Access to Medical Records via MyChart. Give it to your parent's provider's office, or mail it to the hospital medical records department.
  4. 4If your parent has diminished capacity, you can set up proxy access at their provider's office.
  5. 5A court-appointed guardian attaches a copy of the court order to the proxy form.

  • When your parent asks, the hospital must answer within 30 days. It can take 30 more days once, if it explains why in writing.
  • It can charge only a reasonable fee, based on what the copy costs to make.
  • These rules also cover an electronic copy your parent asks, in writing, to have sent to you.
