How to see your parent’s MyChart account with your own login, how to get copies from the records office, and how to keep the results in one place.

See your parent’s MyChart account

Hospitals call this proxy access, or family access. You sign in with your own login and switch to your parent’s account, so you never need their password. At Houston Methodist: the patient sends an invite, or you send a request that the patient approves.

  1. 1You and your parent both need a Houston Methodist MyChart account.
  2. 2Invite route: your parent clicks Proxy Invite and logs on to their own account.
  3. 3Request route: you complete the online proxy form, and it goes to your parent for approval.
  4. 4Once your parent approves, the link is set up and you can open their MyChart.
  5. 5If your parent cannot authorize this, or you hold a medical power of attorney or guardianship, use the online form for that case. Staff may contact you for legal papers.

Your parent’s rights

  • Your parent has a legal right to copies of their own records.
  • When your parent asks, the hospital must answer within 30 days. It can take 30 more days once, if it explains why in writing.
  • It can charge only a reasonable fee, based on what the copy costs to make.
  • These rules also cover an electronic copy your parent asks, in writing, to have sent to you.
